How this ranking is built

Open-market sales (transaction code S) reported on SEC Forms 4 and 5 by directors, officers and 10% owners, dated in the year, valued at shares × reported price and summed per insider (by SEC CIK). Individuals only: funds, trusts and holding companies that report as 10% owners are left out, since several of them often report the same shares on one joint filing. Amended filings are not counted; grants, option exercises, tax withholding and gifts are left out. Trades whose filed price cannot be right — one line worth over $1 billion, or a price more than 10 times the company's median that year — are left out too: filers sometimes type the total into the price field.
